Today we are going to talk with Gaia, she is going to tell us about Long Island’s North Fork.

Visiting the Long Island’s North Fork with a local

What city are you going to tell us about?

Not a city, but a lovely area: Long Island’s North Fork.

Is it the city where you are living right now?

Not exactly. I used to live in Northampton, Massachusetts but my boyfriend and I spent all our vacations in Long Island. I left the States in 2014 but I still visit Long Island’s North Fork at least once a year.

How would you describe the North Fork to someone who has never been there?

Hip, relaxed, friendly – the Brooklyn of Long Island.

What is your favourite thing about the North Fork?

What I really love about the North Fork is the atmosphere: rural but hip, casual and friendly. As a food and wine enthusiast, I’m really fascinated by all the family-run wineries on the North Fork’s Main Road (also known as Route 25) and the food that makes Long Island such a foodie destination  (besides oysters and lobsters, this area of Long Island has a long heritage in several ethnic cuisines).

Se vuoi visitare North Fork, Long Island, non dimenticarti di assaggiare le aragoste in uno dei suoi locali.

What is the one thing you think can’t be missed when you are visiting Long Island’s North Fork?

Make sure you visit at least one winery on the Main Road. You can choose among more than 30 wineries: pick Castello di Borghese Winery if you want to try the oldest wine producer in Long Island; go to Croteaux Vineyard if you’re looking for a more glamorous place (Croteaux produces only rosé – in the summer do not miss their “Rosè on the Run”, a food truck parked just in front of the main entrance serving chilled glasses of rosè with French-inspired snacks.)

What is your favourite thing to do in Long Island’s North Fork when you have some time off?

In the summer, I would spend the day at the beach. I like South Harbor and New Suffolk Beach.

What is your favourite restaurant?

Frisky Oyster in Greenport. The restaurant is cozy and warm and serves creative American cuisine focusing on seafood.

Visiting North Fork, Long Island you need to taste good fish.

What is your favourite cheap restaurantfor a quick lunch?

In the summer, The North Fork Table & Inn (one of the best fine dining restaurants in the area) has a food truck that serves delicious sandwiches and salads. Remember you’re still in Long Island – expect to pay about 20 dollars for a lobster roll, 10-12 dollars for a regular sandwich.

What’s your favourite place to have a beer or a cocktail in the North Fork?

I love to get a beer at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. – do not miss their Otherside Ipa.

What do you recommend doing on a rainy day?

Pick your favorite winery and do a wine tasting.

What do you recommend doing for free?

A walk on the beach.

Una delle cose assolutamente da fare per visitare North Fork, Long Islan, è una passeggiata sulla spiaggia.

Is there one thing not many people know about the North Fork you would like to tell us?

Shucking oysters is one of the North Fork’s local hobbies. If you want to learn how to shuck an oyster like a pro, go to  Little Creek Oyster Farm (they provide all the tools needed, including shucking gloves!). Their oysters are the freshest in the area.

Anything else you think we should know?

Although much cheaper that the Hamptons, be aware that the North Fork is not the cheapest destination in the U.S.
